Dell’s Four-Way PowerEdge Servers

Dell introduced its two new four-way PowerEdge servers 6800 and 6850 are the high-end business servers specifically designed to support powerful database applications. PowerEdge 6800 and PowerEdge 6850 are the dual-core, quad-socket servers which are expected to reach the market sometime in the next few days will retail at a base price of $3,999 and $4,899 respectively.

The 6800 and 6850 PowerEdge servers are based on Intel’s newest 32-/64-bit Xeon MP processor which is expected to be launched next week and these servers will provide 32% faster performance than its previous four-way offerings. Apart from the 64-bit capabilities through Intel’s EM64T technology, the system also includes features like faster DDR-2 memory, PCI Express I/O technology, hot-plug hard drives, and mirroring.

According to the Dell’s officials, both the PowerEdge servers offer the highest levels of performance and a lower cost of acquisition. The servers are available in two configurations i.e. one with 8M-byte, Level-3 cache, appropriate for data-intensive database applications, and second with a smaller, Level-2 cache, faster clock speed, appropriate for server consolidation and more processor-intensive enterprises applications.

The commodity four-way servers are much easier and cheaper to manufacture i.e. having less engineering complexity than eight-way machine. Both the 6800 and 6850 servers are certified to run Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Database 9i Real Application Cluster and Microsoft SQL servers. These database-oriented computers are ideal for tasks such as server consolidation and virtualization, and migration from RISC-based systems.
